Our Legacy
Nazrul Islam Hall, commonly known as KNIH, was established in 1953 as one of the premier halls of residence at Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET). Named after Kazi Nazrul Islam, the national poet of Bangladesh, the hall embodies the spirit of creativity, resilience, and intellectual excellence.
Over the decades, KNIH has been home to thousands of engineering students who have gone on to become leaders in industry, academia, and government service across Bangladesh and around the world. The hall not only provided accommodation but also shaped character through its rich cultural traditions, sports activities, and academic environment.
Heritage Building
The building was originally constructed and known as "Sourav Hotel" before being converted into a residential hall for engineering students.
Foundation
Nazrul Islam Hall was established as one of the premier halls of residence at BUET.
Inauguration
On September 18, 1953, the then Vice-Chancellor Dr. M.A. Rashid inaugurated the building as "Nazrul Islam Hall" - one of the earliest residential halls at BUET.
The Rename Campaign
The general secretary-elect of South Engineering Hostel proposed renaming the hostel to Nazrul Hall. A gala cultural function in November 1962 formally proclaimed the name "Nazrul Hall" in honour of the national poet.
First Cultural Program
The first cultural program was organized on a Saturday evening in January 1964. The poem "Bol Bir - Bol Unnoto Momo Shir" was recited and the hall was officially named "Nazrul Hall" in honor of the national poet.
First Expansion
New wings were added to accommodate the growing student population.
Reconstruction
The hall was rebuilt after the liberation war damage.
40th Anniversary
Celebrated 40 years of excellence with grand alumni gathering.
Modernization
Complete renovation with modern facilities.
60th Anniversary
Diamond jubilee celebration with record alumni participation.
Renamed to Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall
On August 28, 2019, the hall was officially renamed from "Nazrul Islam Hall" to "Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall" to fully honor the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
70th Anniversary
Platinum jubilee celebration marking seven decades of excellence.
Alumni Association Formed
The Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall Alumni Association was officially formed with the creation of an executive committee. The first grand reunion (মহাপুনর্মিলনী) was held on February 3, 2023.
